Moses Baskets and Cribs
In the early days of baby's life, you will probably want them to sleep in the same room as you for comfort and practicality.
A cot can take up too much room in your bedroom, and you may want to consider either a moses basket or crib.

Cots
- Cots are suitable for babies from birth.
- Cots come with either a fixed side or a drop side mechanism. A drop-side mechanism allows you to lower or raise the side with one hand, while cradling your baby with the other.
- Check that the cot you are buying has a teething rail, this clear non-toxic plastic protects your baby's gums once he's teething and has started to chew.
- Most cots come with an adjustable-height mattress base, with 2 - 3 base positions. The highest position for newborns, and the lowest for babies who can stand up. Mattresses are usually sold separately.
Cot Beds
Cot beds are suitable from birth. They are larger than cots, with removable sides, so they can be converted into a bed when your child is ready.
They do not usually have drop sides and not all versions have different mattress positions.
Cot beds are a great money saver, as they can be used from the day your baby is born to approximately 5 years.
You should expect to pay a bit more for a cot bed than a normal cot. Some cot beds do more than just convert into a bed-a few models convert to a sofa or day-bed, so you can still use it even once your child’s outgrown the junior bed.
Travel Cots
Travel Cots are ideal for holidays and nights at grandma's house. They mean you won’t have to babyproof your hotel on arrival! The are designed to be lightweight and easy to put together. Most travel cots come complete with a comfy padded mattress and a handy travel bag, making it easy to transport.
Here is a handy checklist to make sure your buying the right one:
- How heavy / lightweight is it?
- What are the dimensions?
- Does it have a carry bag?
- Does it have mesh sides / viewing window?
- Does it look comfortable for baby?
